Coverdale.
Prologue
“Whitewashed
tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inside are full of dead men's
bones and all kinds of uncleanness.”
I was
inspired to write these lyrics by the reality we live in, Kazantzakis's novel Christ
Recrucified, and Varnalis's The Ballad of Mr. Mentios. As for the
musical style, I thought it would fit something that Zakk Wylde would play
musically and David Coverdale would sing. And that is roughly how the following
was built, both in lyrics and music...
I hope you
like it as much as I do. I truly wish there will be a chance for it to be
played by real musicians one day... it would bring out even more soul.
THE SAINTS
IN WHITE
LYRICS -
WORDS : NICK PARASTATIDIS
Oh, Lord…
Tell me
what they did with your name.
The blood
is still running…
And the
world remains the same.
He forgave
the thief, he forgave the man
Who spilled
another's blood with his own two hands
But the
ones who stood with their faces clean
Were the
darkest souls that he'd ever seen
They wore
their virtue like a crown of gold
While their
hearts grew black and their hands grew cold
He spoke
the truth, and they turned away
Some truths
are too costly for the price they pay
They said,
"Be quiet, don't you dare speak"
"Your
words cut deep, and your truth is weak"
But the
truth don't bend, and the truth don't lie
So they
nailed the truth to a cross to die
Saints in
white, with hearts of stone
Preaching
love from a blood-soaked throne
You
crucified the truth to save your lies
Then raised
your God in your own disguise
Oh, the
poor still crawl, and the rich still rise
Another
innocent soul beneath blackened skies
You speak
of heaven while the children die
Tell me
who's the devil in your holy disguise?
And if the
cross was not enough
You dressed
your greed in sacred stuff
You built a
God who thinks like you
Who blesses
your wars and your fortunes too
A God who
smiles when the mighty win
Who shuts
his eyes to the starving within
You changed
his face, you changed his word
And killed
the meaning of all that you heard
You wash
your hands, but the stain remains
You hide
your guilt behind holy names
The bells
still ring, but the streets still cry
And the innocent
pay while the guilty get by
Saints in
white, with hearts of stone
Preaching
love from a blood-soaked throne
You
crucified the truth to save your lies
Then raised
your God in your own disguise
Oh, the
poor still crawl, and the rich still rise
Another
innocent soul beneath blackened skies
You speak
of heaven while the children die
Tell me
who's the devil in your holy disguise?
«Τάφους ασβεστωμένους, οι οποίοι εξωτερικά μεν φαίνονται ωραίοι, από μέσα όμως είναι γεμάτοι από κόκκαλα νεκρών και από κάθε είδους ακαθαρσία».
And you
still dare to speak of holiness…
Look at
what you've done.
WHOSE GOD
IS THIS?
THE GOD OF
THE POOR?
THE GOD OF
THE WEAK?
OR THE GOD
OF WAR?
WHO FILLS
HIS POCKETS
WITH THE
BLOOD OF THE DEAD?
WHO SLEEPS
ON GOLD
WHILE THE CHILDREN
STARVE?
Saints in
white, with hearts of stone
You built
your heaven on a field of bones
You
crucified the truth to save your lies
Then raised
your God in your own disguise
The poor
still crawl, and the rich still rise
Young blood
spills beneath a stranger's skies
The
innocent die for the wealthy man's prize
And you
call it glory — what a beautiful lie!
He forgave
the thief…
He forgave
the man who killed…
But the
ones who wore the mask…
Were never
standing still.
Oh, Lord…
They killed
you once…
And they've been doing it ever since.
